About Gear Racks

Gear racks are linear components with teeth cut into one side of a square, rectangular, or round bar, designed to mesh with a circular pinion gear. This system, known as a rack and pinion, is the primary mechanical method for converting rotary motion into linear motion.
Key Types of Gear Racks
  • Straight (Spur) Gear Racks: These feature teeth cut parallel to the rack's axis. They are the most common type due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness for standard linear motion.
  • Helical Gear Racks: The teeth are cut at an angle (helix). This design provides smoother, quieter operation and higher load capacity because the teeth engage gradually.
  • Round Gear Racks: These use a cylindrical rod as the base, allowing for a simpler bearing structure. They are often used in applications where the rack itself must move through a sleeve.
  • Machined-End Racks: Specifically designed to be joined end-to-end to create almost limitless travel lengths.

The straight teeth of the rack are cut into one face of the square or circular section of the rod and fit with the pinion, which has the characteristics of mechanical simplicity, high load-carrying capacity, and unlimited length.
  • Application - Spur racks are paired with spur gears and are suitable for lifting mechanisms (vertical movement), horizontal movement, positioning mechanisms, stopping and allowing simultaneous rotation of multiple axes in industrial machinery.
  • Note - Only gears of the same type can be used with racks. For example, a 1M rack can be used with all 1M gears.
